Catching Up

I haven't updated this in quite a while, but I finally got a minute... life over the past six months has been a whirlwind! I'll begin at the beginning.
Left NYC for Portland, Maine to plan a large project I was hoping to undertake with fellow photographer Alan Winslow. Took a course in Radio Production at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. Fell hard for radio production under the expert guidance of Rob Rosenthal. Wrote some grants and approached sponsors about aforementioned project called Project Tandem. Received overwhelming support and began planning departure. Left in September for project- click HERE for the website and all the info... While on the road with Project Tandem received a request to broadcast the small radio piece I produced over the summer. Just returned to Portland for the holidays (going back on the road at the end of the month), and picked up the December issue of Port City Life which featured a story I shot for them earlier in 2008 on an artist in mid-coast Maine.
Now I'm here in Portland, writing more grants and putting together a teaser of some of the work Project Tandem has done in this first leg while catching up on administrative stuff (it's hard to do office work from a bicycle or tent)! Also going to research and apply for more grants... we're getting close to having enough funds to complete this project, but we definitely aren't there yet.

Sas and Colin Christian Opening

Once again I was hired by the Opera Gallery in SoHo to photograph an opening... this time for the artists Sas and Colin Christian. They were both SO friendly and their opening was a huge success. Photographing their opening was a blast too- their art complimented the atmosphere and everyone really seemed to be having a great time. Here are a couple of my favorites from last night.

Oli G. Johannsson Opening

The best part about being a photographer is that you are making a living with your camera, even if what you are photographing isn't the world's most visually exciting subject, in my estimation it still beats any other job out there. Here are a couple shots I took last week for the Opera Gallery in SoHo. The occasion was Oli G. Johannsson's opening and it was a beautiful show. I love photographing the people surrounded by the art- it adds such an interesting dimension to the shots.

Dahlov Ipcar

Last spring I had the amazing opportunity to photograph the artist Dahlov Ipcar at her studio in Georgetown, Maine for a wonderfully written piece by Leah Chernikoff. I have only just had the time this week to start scanning my negatives from the shoot and I thought I'd post a couple of them here as I go through them...

Obama

So for a couple of days now I've been walking by this incredible stretch of wall in my neighborhood in Brooklyn that has been painted/graffitied with an excerpt from one of Senator Obama's speeches and a rendering of his face. I am not only impressed by the artistry, but also the historical context that is being somehow honored by this wall. I've gone to shoot it twice now, but I think my nighttime shots were better. This is my favorite.

New York Times

Yay for a photo in the New York Times! It was in the art section... nice and big. I took it for the production "The Scariest" which is playing at the Theaters at 45 Bleecker. Cool show, but tricky to photograph because of the lightbulbs hanging EVERYWHERE! The whole stage is full of them and they sort of flicker throughout the show. Of course, every time there was a really nice shot I wanted, that actor would inevitably be standing with their face just inches away from the bulb... blowing out their face and making metering really tricky. I got a couple shots I liked though, including the one the Times used!

Viva Las Vegas!

So I just returned from a week in Las Vegas assisting the lovely photographer Anne Day (http://www.annedayphotography.com Her work is beautiful!) on a project shooting couples getting married in the Vegas Chapels during Valentines Day Week with her 4x5 view camera. It was an exhausting, exhilarating, inspiring and hilarious week as we navigated the ins and outs of the Vegas wedding industry and the red tape and crazies that come with it. Anyway, Anne did some amazing work and when I had a second a snapped a couple of my own.
